Pool Placement Guidelines
Pool position related to boundaries and structures
These guidelines are commonly used across Australia. Individual council and certifier requirements may vary.
Minimum 1.0m from pool water edge to boundary (typical).
Minimum 1.5m from pool edge to buildings, garages or structures recommended. This ensures structures are not undermined during excavation. Distance may be reduced with engineering or approvals however it is subject to building approvals.
Important: Your building certifier will provide the final ruling for your property.
Sizing Examples
If you want a ‘3m wide pool’ you will typically require ‘at least 5.5m’ of width.
If you want a ‘7m long pool’, you will typically require ‘at least 9.5m’ of length.
These simple rules-of-thumb help you visualise what fits before you select a pool and start formal approvals.
Pool position related to your living spaces
The pool position works best when it is in close proximity to — or visually connected from — your major living areas: Kitchen, Dining and Lounge. Achieve all three and you have the trifecta — a beautifully engaging pool that becomes part of your everyday living.
If your pool is positioned further from your home, consider creating a destination zone with a cabana, pool house, BBQ area or outdoor kitchen to encourage family use.
FAQs
How do I know what pool size fits my backyard?
Use the 1m boundary rule and 1.5m structure rule. Measure your space, subtract clearances, and the remaining area indicates the max pool size.
Can I build closer than 1 metre from the boundary?
Yes, however this typically requires engineering and special approvals. Councils may reject requests without strong justification.
How much space do I need around the pool for fencing?
There is no hard rule, but we recommend allowing ‘900mm–1.2m’ for comfortable fencing and access.
Do smaller pools cost less to install?
Generally yes. Less excavation and concrete. However soil, equipment choice, access limitations, and minimum machinery/operator fees all play a role.
What size pool is best for families in urban settings?
6m–8m pools suit most families, offering swim length and usable seating.
What size pool works best for small backyards?
4–5m plunge-style pools fit most courtyards and narrow yards.
What size pool is best for families in rural settings?
Larger pools (8m+) are ideal — you won’t regret extra space when yard size isn’t a limitation.
Can I put a pool on a sloping block?
Yes — most sloping blocks can accommodate a pool using cost-effective cut-and-fill with small retaining solutions (around 0.6m).
